Located inside the historic Palacio Municipal, in front of the Plaza Central, this museum exhibits aspects of the pre-Hispanic history of Tapachula. There are vestiges of monoliths and of the archaeological zone of Izapa.

This archaeological zone of Tapachula is one of the oldest in México and the most important on the Chiapas coast. The Mixe-Zoque culture first inhabited this area 3,500 years ago and its foundation is considered to have been around 1,500 BCE. It was considered one of the most important commercial centers in its time, thanks to its strategic location and the traffic of obsidian and cocoa.
